Rules for registration .mk domains

What types of .mk domains exist?

Within the .mk zone, the following domains exist:

 Primary domain

  • .mk

Secondary domains

  • .gov.mk

  • .edu.mk

  • .org.mk

  • .com.mk

  • .net.mk

  • .inf.mk

Who can register a Macedonian domain?

.mk (primary domain)

The following may register:

  • Natural persons with residence or temporary residence in North Macedonia

  • Legal entities registered in North Macedonia

  • Foreign legal entities (with proper registration in their home country)

.gov.mk domain

Intended for and may be registered by:

  • State administration bodies

  • Public institutions

  • Public enterprises

  • Municipalities and the City of Skopje

This domain can be registered and managed exclusively through the state registrar MARNET.

.edu.mk

Intended for and may be registered by:

  • Educational institutions

  • Scientific and research institutions

  • Foreign educational institutions licensed to operate in North Macedonia

.org.mk

Intended for and may be registered by:

  • Non-profit organizations

  • Associations and foundations

  • Political parties

  • Trade unions

  • Public and private healthcare institutions

  • Embassies and foreign non-profit organizations with legal authorization

.com.mk / .net.mk / .inf.mk

Intended for and may be registered by:

  • Commercial companies

  • Sole proprietors

  • Chambers and cooperatives

  • Financial organizations

  • All legal entities and natural persons registered to perform commercial activity

Domain Name Rules (.mk)

The domain name must meet the following conditions:

Allowed characters:

  • Latin letters (a–z)

  • Numbers (0–9)

  • Hyphen (-)

Length:

  • 2 to 63 characters

Not allowed:

  • Starting or ending with a hyphen

  • Two consecutive hyphens

Exception: A 1-character domain is allowed only for a registered trademark or brand.

Required Information for Macedonian Domain Registration

The following must be provided during registration:

  • Domain name

  • Full name (for natural persons) or company name (for legal entities)

  • Address

  • Tax identification number (for legal entities)

  • Email address

  • Administrative contact

  • Technical contact

  • At least 2 nameservers

User Identification Methods

Natural Persons

  • Submission of a registration request in person and presentation of ID card or passport - only for natural persons with residence or temporary residence in North Macedonia. Does NOT apply for foreign persons .
    or

  • Electronic identification in accordance with the Law on Electronic Documents, Electronic Identification and Trust Services, and related by-laws -only for natural persons with residence or temporary residence in North Macedonia. Does NOT apply for foreign persons 


Legal Entities

  • Registration document from the competent registry (current status certificate or registration decision)

  • Request submitted in person with signature and company stamp, or electronically with a qualified digital signature of an authorized representative

  • Additional authorization (for .gov.mk, .edu.mk, .org.mk when applicable)

Registration Period

  • Domains may be registered for 1 to 10 years

  • They can be renewed before expiration

  • The number of domains per registrant is unlimited

What happens if a domain expires?

  • 60-day protection period (no modifications allowed)

  • After 120 days, the domain is fully deleted and becomes available for registration

Registrant Obligations

The registrant is required to:

  • Provide accurate information

  • Report any change of data within 8 days

  • Maintain active contact email addresses

  • Not infringe intellectual property rights

Changes and Transfers

The following are possible:

  • Change of contact details

  • Change of registrant (with consent or court decision). If based on mutual consent, the procedure is described at the following link:

  • Change of registrar

The name of a registered domain cannot be changed.
