What is inodes (file number) and what is the allowed limit per hosting?

Inode is a data structure in a Unix file system that describes a file system object such as a file or directory.

The number of inodes indicates the number of folders and files you have on your hosting. This resource includes emails, pictures, videos, text documents, etc. which you store on a server.

Each file has an inode and is identified by an inode number (i-number).

Shared hosting

We currently have several limits for the allowed number of inodes. They range from 200000 (soft limit) to 500000 (hard limit) depending on the type of package you have purchased.

Soft limit means that when you exceed this limit you can still upload files, while when you exceed the hard limit you are prevented from writing more to disk.

You can see the limits per package at the following links in the read more section

Dedicated server

Dedicated servers have no restrictions on the number of inodes. As a user you have root access and you can set this limit to the physical limits of the server and file system as needed.

Care should be taken not to set a large number as a limit as it may adversely affect the performance of the entire server.
